What’s Virtual Reality, and How Does it Compare to Augmented Reality?

Virtual Reality or augmented reality? The two terms are a lot like wine and cheese; they can make each other seem very delicious. And why shouldn’t they be? After all, one would expect Virtual Reality to be as real as the real world, right?

Virtual reality was once simply defined as a computer generated version of the real world. Now, thanks to advances in technology, this has expanded to the point where it has become indistinguishable from reality, with everything including the background, environment, and graphics being completely digitally recreated. And thanks to the ever-expanding number of players, you can actually see your friend’s head when they are playing on your computer screen. So now, the question is, “what is Virtual Reality and Augmented reality?”

In short, Virtual Reality is an interactive display that allows you to manipulate 3D objects while they are on your screen. This can include anything from walking through a museum, or flying a plane, or even walking through a virtual space ship. You are also fully immersed in the virtual world, so the effects can be truly incredible.

One of the great advantages of Virtual Reality is that there are virtually no limits as to how much you can experience in a single session, unlike with the real world. Virtual reality is highly advanced, allowing players to experience almost any kind of activity they can imagine without the need for any physical interaction at all.

Augmented reality on the other hand is where the term is actually a misnomer; instead of virtual the word refers to computer generated “augmented” environments. These environments are usually created in such a way that their components are already in the real world, but they have been “enhanced.” For example, cars, boats, homes, and cities may already exist in the real world but are only partially displayed in virtual form.

Augmented reality allows the user to fully experience every feature of a piece of real world material and then some. By having physical elements in the virtual world, users are able to literally enter another world entirely in which they can experience the items and activities found only in the virtual world.

Although the two terms do share similar definitions and characteristics, Virtual reality and augmented reality differ greatly in their application. Which is best for you?

With Virtual Reality you can experience nearly any type of action imaginable and still have complete control over it by simply moving your virtual body within the virtual environment. For example, you can experience all of the major and minor movements necessary to drive a car, fly an airplane, control a computer, or even walk through a museum.

When using Virtual Reality you can do all kinds of things in the virtual world, yet the only limitations you have are those that you set for yourself in real life. For instance, you can take full advantage of your environment in terms of temperature, lighting, and the like. All of this can be changed on the fly, by simply moving the controls. and adjusting them to fit your needs.

The only limitation to augmented reality is the extent to which the user wishes to stretch his or her imagination. You can create almost any environment imaginable.

With Virtual Reality you can experience everything from playing video games in 3-D, to driving a car, or flying a helicopter, to controlling a boat, jet aircraft, or a spaceship. You can get almost anything you want out of using Virtual Reality technology, and at a fraction of the cost.
